Rebecca Chafin (Calhoun) - Class Of 1958

Rebecca Calhoun Obituary

CALHOUN
Rebecca "Becky" Chafin Calhoun, age 78, was greeted by her Lord Jesus in heaven on Saturday, September 15, 2018.

Becky was born in Geraldine, AL, but Jacksonville was her home over 60 years. Becky was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Deryle Calhoun, Sr. She is survived by sons, Deryle, Jr. (Debbie, "Trey", Sally) & Barry (Alisha, Ashton, Taylor, Skyy); daughter, Terri Calhoun Nelson (John, Ashley, Kyle, Anna); sister, Gaye Lunsford; brothers-and-sisters in law, Jim & Pat Chafin and Stan & Janet Chafin; and many nieces & nephews.

Becky was an administrative assistant in her early years, but soon after her kids were born, she became the best stay-at-home mom ever! During that time, she was active at Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church as a choir member & children's choir leader as well as involved with her kids' elementary school functions. Later in life, she became a loving caregiver for Deryle. 9 years ago, Becky was paralyzed by a virus in her spine. Doctors said she would probably need a nursing home for the rest of her life. She proved them wrong & continued to live independently until 2 weeks before her death. Her outspoken faith in God to get her through many serious health trials is her legacy. Becky's love for her grandkids was something she shouted from the rooftops.

Becky was known to friends and family as the "Grammar Queen," a trait which showed in her eloquent emails of inspiration & encouragement to others as well as her many Letters to the Editor of the Times Union. Becky is described by her family as a good, caring, compassionate, joyful, happy, optimistic, inspiring, faith-filled, God-honoring, amazing, patient, determined, strong, dauntless, persistent, tenacious, steadfast, detail-oriented fighter!

Memorial services will be held on Friday, September 21, 2018 at 1:30 pm at Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church, 4001 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville. (Visitation 12:45-1:30 pm). Private interment will be held in Oaklawn Cemetery. If anyone desires to make a charitable contribution, Becky supported research of the Transverse Myelitis Association, P.O. Box 826962, Philadelphia, PA 19182, in hopes of finding a cure for others with the disease that caused her paralysis.
